<image:caption>Taking Pine Camp’s history and topography as inspiration, InLight 2024: Grounds for Clearing will explore the material and metaphorical facets of open space. When Pine Camp first came to be, it was a clearing – a space carved out of the pine woods, far outside of the city where people went to heal. A former farm and site of both a whites-only and separate Black Tuberculosis Hospital listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Pine Camp today is a multidisciplinary, multiracial community space that offers a theater, dance studio, art classes, darkroom, playground, basketball court, soccer field, walking trails, nature reserves, and public artworks. Pine Camp’s history stretches back to Virginia’s colonial settlements of the early 1600s, and the site was part of the agricultural land north of the city of Richmond during the periods leading up to the end of the Civil War. After, Pine Camp became City Farm (1866-1909), producing food for city institutions, such as the jail and the city almshouse. The city also utilized the farm in the early twentieth century as an isolation ward for those with highly contagious diseases, especially smallpox, and it was popularly known as “the pest house.” At this time, Pine Camp became a private, whites-only Tuberculosis hospital where isolation, rest, and fresh air in pleasant surroundings were the first lines of disease treatment. This site’s impressive pine trees added to this treatment as they have been shown to have antimicrobial properties. Pine trees are also important because of their durable timber and fast growth. In 1936 the city established a separate Black infirmary. Space in the infirmary was very limited, and it was demolished in 1957 after the main hospital closed. Remains from the hospital, such as bottles and bedpans, can still be found on the site to this day.</image:caption>

<image:caption>1708 Gallery’s 16th annual InLight took place November 3-4, 2023 along the 200 to 400 blocks of West Broad Street in Richmond, Virginia’s downtown Arts District. InLight is 1708’s annual public exhibition of contemporary art. InLight takes place at night and each year is in a different location in Richmond. InLight features multimedia, sculpture, installation, performance, community-based works, and virtual projects that utilize light-based platforms (projections, lighting design, and more) to be experienced in the dark. Past sites include Bryan Park, Chimborazo Park, Scott’s Addition, and the sculpture garden and grounds of the VMFA. In recent years, InLight has pushed the boundaries of its original form–a light-based media festival–to meaningfully engage notions of place and new modes of creativity and presentation in contemporary art. Reflection and Refraction honored InLight's fifteen-year history and its present and future as a contemporary art exhibition of site-specific, multimedia works in the public sphere. Just as InLight's form has changed and dispersed – refracted – so have the blocks surrounding 1708 Gallery. Reflection and Refraction brings InLight home to 1708 Gallery and the surrounding businesses to highlight how art continues to activate and animate one of Richmond's main arteries and thriving areas – downtown Broad Street. Artist projects engaged with and expanded upon the histories and activities that comprise InLight, as well as Broad Street's current uses. These include the industrial, economic, and racial histories of downtown Richmond and their legacies; public transit and mobility; regional and commercial architectures and their many styles; the role of public art in the upper South; and the significance of Broad Street's surrounding communities. The curatorial team for InLight 2023 was especially interested in proposals that addressed ideas around place making and play as well gathering and dwelling. The team is likewise interested in future-thinking projects that reimagine Broad Street’s locality and its potential beyond the past and present. InLight 2023 was curated by Dr. Tiffany E. Barber and Ra-Twoine Fields.</image:caption>

Projects focused on the social and geographic history of this park including two key moments in the park's history being the location of the largest Confederate military hospital during the Civil War and following Emancipation, hosting a Freedmen’s community for formerly enslaved African-Americans. InLight artists and projects responded to, elaborated on, and proposed new ways of understanding these complex histories.</image:caption>

Thus was born the idea of a one-night, public art exhibition that would offer our community a chance to engage with contemporary art outside the gallery walls. The innagural InLight Richmond was held on September 5, 2008 along West Broad Street in 1708's downtown neighborhood.</image:caption>
